Brigadistas is a film about the 1985 Southern Cross Brigade to Cuba by a group of Australians and New Zealanders. Brigades to Cuba were effectively an ‘exposure tour’ to various aspects of the Cuban situation, organised by an agency of the Cuban government in partnership with the organising committee from Australia. It is a film about the reaction of left-wingers from those two countries to their experience of “really existing socialism” in Cuba as it was at that time.

It was subsequently screened in the video section of the 1986 Sydney International Film Festival, the 1986 Festival of New Latin-American Cinema in Havana, and the 1987 Rio do Janeiro Film Festival.
